Avalara as an SST Certified Service Provider
Simplify Sales Tax. Last updated 2026-09-01. Sources last verified 2026-08-19.
Avalara is a Certified Service Provider under the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, it currently offers free CSP services to qualifying sellers, and it publishes a named SST price tier at $69 per state per month for sellers under $50M in annual revenue. Above $50M, the price is not published.
Start with the size of what you’d be buying into, because it shapes everything below. SST is one program inside a much larger compliance platform. Certification means the Governing Board has cleared Avalara to perform your sales and use tax functions as a Certified Service Provider (CSP), with the member states compensating it for that work on behalf of sellers who qualify. Around that sits the rest of the platform. Avalara reports AvaTax reaching more than 12,000 US sales and use tax jurisdictions and 190 plus countries, and the product set runs through VAT, e-invoicing, excise, communications tax, property tax, business licenses, and 1099 and W-9 filing. Avalara reports 41,000 plus customers. It has been privately held since Vista Equity Partners took it off the NYSE in 2022, and a $500 million investment led by BlackRock in November 2025 left Vista as majority shareholder.

Is Avalara certified, and does it offer free CSP services?
Yes to both, and they’re two facts worth checking separately.
The Governing Board’s Avalara listing records coverage as 24 participating SST states and programs, which is a membership roster rather than a count of the states that will pay for you. Avalara sits among the five certified providers currently offering free services. Avalara’s own SST page puts the offer in money terms: for remote sellers meeting the CSP-compensated seller criteria, it says the cost of key compliance services is covered in 25 states when Avalara acts as your CSP. Where Avalara’s materials say volunteer seller, that’s the older term the CSP contract replaced with CSP-compensated seller.
On the state count. Avalara says 25 where the Governing Board says 24, and Avalara’s own page sets out the composition itself: 24 SST member states, plus Pennsylvania, which operates a similar state-run program. Those are two different counts, one of services coverage and one of membership. This is not a claim that Avalara’s figure is wrong. Two things follow for you. Pennsylvania is not an SST member state, so program rules don’t govern what happens there. And Tennessee, which appears in Avalara’s named list, is the program’s only associate member, so its treatment is unresolved. See what the SST program actually is.
Whether the states pay for you is settled state by state, by the CSP-compensated seller test, and your answer can differ in every one of them.
What does Avalara actually do?
For a qualifying CSP-compensated seller, the free services run across registration, real-time calculation, return preparation, filing and remittance, exemption certificate management, notice management, and audit support and liaison services, all recorded on the Governing Board listing.
Avalara’s own SST page describes the same scope and goes a step past it. It says Avalara registers qualifying businesses in all SST-participating states for free when they enroll, through a single SST registration covering every state you select. Registration is not on the Governing Board’s certified free services list, so a free registration offer is a commercial choice rather than a program baseline.
The boundary sits on that same page, and it matters more to your total cost than the coverage list does: “For non-SST states and non-volunteer sellers, standard pricing and per-return fees apply for Avalara AvaTax, Avalara Managed Returns, and Avalara ECM.” Outside the member states you are on standard pricing, and no figure for those fees appears anywhere on the site.
What does Avalara integrate with?
This is usually where the decision gets made. Avalara reports 1,400 plus signed partner integrations, and the named systems cover ERP, ecommerce, and billing: NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, Salesforce, Shopify, BigCommerce, Stripe, and QuickBooks. There’s a documented API if you’re building your own, and AvaTax matches jurisdictions geospatially rather than by ZIP code.
One thing to settle before you price it. The Custom tier is the column the pricing page labels as carrying all integrations. The two published tiers show a shorter named list, and Avalara doesn’t publish where a given connector falls, so if you run a large ERP, confirm whether your system sits inside the published price or routes to a quote.
What does Avalara cost?
Avalara publishes a separately named SST tier with a price attached to it, checked 2026-08-19.
Table: Avalara’s published pricing tiers, as Avalara publishes them. Checked August 18, 2026. Pricing pages change, so confirm before you rely on it.
| Tier | Price | Revenue gate |
|---|---|---|
| Core Compliance | $79 per state per month, or $799 per state per year | Under $50M |
| Core Compliance + SST Services | $69 per state per month, or $699 per state per year | Under $50M |
| Custom | Not published. “Talk to an expert for a full quote” | $50M and above |
Those figures come from Avalara’s pricing page. The SST tier sits $10 per state per month below the non-SST tier, and what the difference buys is SST enrollment, registration in participating SST states, calculation and filing paid for by those states for qualifying sellers, a single registration ID, audit support, and Avalara-backed liability for calculation errors in participating SST states.
Two things the table can’t tell you. Pricing is per state per month, so your cost tracks how many states you’re registered in rather than how much you sell in any of them. And the per return fees for non-SST states are not published anywhere on the site. If your footprint is wide, that unpublished number is usually the larger one. See what each certified provider charges.
How does Avalara handle support?
Support comes in three tiers, and only Standard is included. It gets you training, a knowledge center, and online case submission, weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time, with a 24 hour response target. Priority is paid, adds live chat and phone, and pulls the target to 8 hours. Enterprise is paid, adds a technical account manager and a sandbox, runs 24/7, and targets 1 hour. Neither paid tier publishes a price.
Implementation splits the same way. Standard Implementation comes with purchase, and guided implementation and managed support are add-ons whose prices are not published either. Get both the response target and the implementation scope in writing before you sign.
Best fit for an enterprise with obligations past US sales tax
Avalara publishes for enterprise and upper mid-market companies whose obligations reach past US sales tax. You already need a broad compliance platform, and you’d rather fold SST into it than run it alongside. The published tier suits a company under $50M in revenue that wants a price before a sales call. If your obligations reach past US sales tax into VAT, e-invoicing, excise, or business licenses, you can source those from the same vendor. Companies on major ERP systems have the widest published connector set here. Its own SST page also states Avalara-backed liability for calculation errors in participating states, which sits on top of the relief the states provide.
Not a fit for
You want a firm total cost from Avalara. Published pricing stops at $50M in revenue, the Custom tier lists no figure, the per return fees Avalara confirms for non-SST states are not published, and neither paid support tier lists a price, so above the revenue gate or with a large non-member footprint you’re quoting rather than comparing.
You’re registered in a long tail of low volume states. The per state per month model charges the same rate in a state with a handful of orders as in your largest, while the states’ compensation offsets only the SST states where you qualify.
You expect to phone someone during a filing crunch. The included tier is online case submission with a 24 hour target on weekday hours, and phone, chat, and 24/7 coverage are paid upgrades, so price that in before you compare.
And if all you want is US SST filing, you’re buying into a platform built for 190 plus countries and a dozen tax types, most of which you won’t use.
