Utah and the Streamlined Sales Tax program
Simplify Sales Tax. Last updated 2026-08-21. Sources last verified 2026-08-21.
Utah is a full member of the Streamlined Sales Tax program and has been since October 1, 2012, so if you register through the Streamlined Sales Tax Registration System (SSTRS) you file there under the program’s uniform rules. Utah takes returns electronically or not at all, and the Utah State Tax Commission rather than you decides whether yours go in monthly or quarterly.
Is Utah in the Streamlined Sales Tax program?
Yes, as a full member, effective October 1, 2012. Utah is one of all 24 member states in the Streamlined Sales Tax program.

What SST membership changes for a seller collecting tax in Utah
Utah comes with the other member states when you register once, on how to register through the SSTRS. It uses the program’s shared definitions and sourcing rules, so one system files there. Selecting it starts an obligation, on what your ongoing obligations are after registering, and whether you qualify to have that work paid for is a separate test, on whether you qualify for free CSP services.
What is specific to Utah
One thing.
Utah joined in two steps, seven years apart. Its participation took effect October 1, 2005 as an associate member, and full membership followed on October 1, 2012. Those are two different arrangements, and it’s the 2012 date that answers whether Utah is a full member state today. So if you inherited a sales tax memo written somewhere between those two dates, check which Utah it’s describing before you act on it.
None of that goes away because Utah is a member state. Full membership in 2012 put Utah behind one registration and the program’s shared definitions, and left the filing machinery where it was: the return still goes in electronically through the commission’s own system, and it’s still the commission, working from the prior year’s liability, that decides whether you file monthly or quarterly. Whoever files yours needs Taxpayer Access Point credentials before the first return is due, and the commission owns that date, which you’ll find on Utah sales and use tax rather than here. That reaches none of the states outside the program either.
Where to register and where to find current rates
Register through the SSTRS and select Utah. Utah sales and use tax carries the current rates, the forms, and the dates, and the department’s own account of its participation is on its Streamlined Sales Tax page.
We don’t publish a Utah rate or a filing date here on purpose: a number that changes belongs with the department that changes it.
