Nevada and the Streamlined Sales Tax program
Simplify Sales Tax. Last updated 2026-08-21. Sources last verified 2026-08-21.
Nevada is a full member of the Streamlined Sales Tax program and has been since April 1, 2008, so if you register through the Streamlined Sales Tax Registration System (SSTRS) you file there under the program’s uniform rules. Nevada changed how its local tax is sourced to get in, and that shows up in your calculations rather than your paperwork.
Is Nevada in the Streamlined Sales Tax program?
Yes, as a full member, effective April 1, 2008. Nevada is one of all 24 member states in the Streamlined Sales Tax program.

What SST membership changes for a seller collecting tax in Nevada
Nevada comes with the other member states when you register once, on how to register through the SSTRS. It uses the program’s shared definitions and sourcing rules, so one system files there. Selecting it starts an obligation, on what your ongoing obligations are after registering, and whether you qualify to have that work paid for is a separate test, on whether you qualify for free CSP services.
What is specific to Nevada
Three things.
Local tax follows the delivery address. Nevada moved to a destination based local sales tax system as part of joining the program. Ship to a Nevada customer and the local portion is the one where the order lands, not the one where you ship from. That’s a calculation change rather than a filing change, so it lands in whatever system prices your orders, and it applies per shipment rather than per customer. Two orders to the same buyer at two addresses can carry two different local amounts.
Nevada joined in 2008, not at the start. Its participation took effect April 1, 2008, two and a half years after the program opened. Anything internal you’re reading about how Nevada works, written before then, describes a state that hadn’t adopted the program’s sourcing rules yet.
One department collects the local portions too. The Department of Taxation administers sales and use tax including the local pieces, so you register once, file one return, and have one place to ask when something is unclear. That also means the local detail you need sits with the same department as the state detail.
None of that goes away because Nevada is a member state. Destination sourcing made the local portion consistent, not absent, so you still compute a local amount per delivery address. Shared definitions don’t decide what Nevada taxes or at what rate, state level administration doesn’t remove the return, and none of it reaches past Nevada into the states outside the program.
Where to register and where to find current rates
Register through the SSTRS and select Nevada. Nevada sales and use tax carries the current state and local rates, forms, and dates, and the department’s own Streamlined sales tax FAQs carry its answers about its participation, in its own words.
We don’t publish a Nevada rate or a filing date here on purpose: a number that changes belongs with the department that changes it.
