Sovos as an SST Certified Service Provider
Simplify Sales Tax. Last updated 2026-09-01. Sources last verified 2026-08-19.
Sovos is one of six Certified Service Providers under the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, and its SST Model 1 program carries no filing or remittance fees in the member states where you qualify, because those states pay Sovos directly. Everything outside that is quoted, not published. US sales and use tax is one line in a much wider compliance business, and that shapes most of what follows.
Sovos sells indirect tax determination, e-invoicing, information reporting and withholding, unclaimed property, and specialty compliance for insurance and beverage alcohol. US sales tax is one product line inside that, and that is the most useful thing to know before you read anything else here.
Scale is harder to pin down than you’d expect. Sovos’s own About page, as retrieved on August 19, 2026, reports more than 2,600 employees and more than 100,000 customers, half the Fortune 500 among them, operating in more than 70 countries. The Governing Board’s Sovos listing puts the customer count at more than 7,000. Both are primary sources and they don’t agree, so read either as a rough sense of size rather than a number to set against another provider’s.

Is Sovos certified, and does it offer free CSP services?
Yes on both. Sovos sits on the Governing Board’s certified provider list with no note limiting its free CSP services, and its SST Model 1 page states the money condition in a single sentence: “No filing or remittance fees in SST states where you qualify under the Model 1 program, as Sovos is compensated directly by participating states.” Fees apply only for non-SST states, for member states where you don’t meet the eligibility criteria, and for additional value-added services.
The qualifier is the part that decides your number. The certified system is Sovos Global Tax Determination, and whether a state pays your bill turns on the CSP-compensated seller criteria, tested state by state, not on which of the six certified providers you hire. Work through the CSP-compensated seller test before you count any state as free.
What does Sovos actually do?
Under Model 1, close to all of it, on Sovos’s own description of the service. Sovos sets up and integrates its certified system with yours, including a product mapping exercise, works out the tax on each transaction, prepares and files the returns, sends the money, and answers the notices and audits that come out of that work. It helps with registration too, and that one is worth a second look, because registration isn’t on the Governing Board’s list of certified free services. Sovos is absorbing a cost there rather than meeting a program baseline.
Two details in Sovos’s SST fact sheet matter more than the feature list does. First, in an audit of a Model 1 CSP-compensated seller, Sovos is the state’s first point of contact and you are not. Second, the liability relief that rides along with a certified system is not absolute: hand Sovos the wrong classification for an item, watch it get mapped, and the tax comes out wrong on your input, which leaves the liability with you. Where that boundary sits in general is on audits when you use a CSP.
What does Sovos integrate with?
ERP first, and that is your fit test. The published adaptor list runs Magento, SAP, Oracle NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Shopify, and Microsoft Dynamics, with an API behind it for a homegrown system. The separate connector marketplace points the same way, at ERP, procurement, and e-invoicing, with Coupa, Basware, Oracle EBS, SAP S4HANA, JD Edwards, and Zuora among the entries.
What the marketplace didn’t list as of the fetch date is the ecommerce end: no BigCommerce, no WooCommerce, no Amazon, no Walmart, no Stripe. So if your system of record is SAP, NetSuite, or Dynamics, there’s a path somebody has already walked. If your business runs on a hosted storefront plus a billing tool, you’re working from the adaptor list or writing to the API, and that is a scoping conversation to have before you sign rather than after.
What does Sovos cost?
Nothing you can look up. There’s no pricing page on sovos.com, the SST Model 1 page carries no figure, no tier, and no unit of measure, and the filing managed services page answers the question with a line about custom pricing based on your company and needs. Every route to a number runs through a demo request or a sales call.
What Sovos does publish is the shape of the bill, which is more useful than it sounds, because it tells you which states land on it:
- The states pay for the qualifying Model 1 work. Calculation, return preparation and filing, remittance, and notice and audit response, in the member states where you meet the CSP-compensated seller criteria.
- You pay in the member states where you don’t meet them. Property or people in a state can take you out of the free category in that state and nowhere else, which is why the program often pays off least in your biggest member states.
- You pay for everything outside the member states. Those are ordinary paid engagements with no state funding behind them.
- You pay for the value-added services on top. Anything past the certified scope is quoted separately.
For how that sits against what the other certified providers publish, see what an SST Certified Service Provider costs.
How does Sovos handle support?
You get a person rather than a queue. Sovos assigns you a dedicated tax professional who oversees your monthly filings and acts as your primary point of contact for state communications and audits, and the Governing Board listing adds a hands-on implementation team and prioritized support for SST Certified Service Provider customers. Filing activity shows up in Sovos dashboards, so you can see what went out and when.
What you can’t check beforehand is the part a service relationship actually turns on. There are no published support hours, no response time target, and no service level agreement. If any of those would decide it for you, put them on the agenda for the sales call, because none of it sits on a page you can read first.
Best fit for a large organization with an in-house tax function
Sovos publishes for larger organizations with an in-house tax function and a major ERP. The shape that fits is a company already running SAP, NetSuite, or Dynamics that wants one vendor across US sales tax, VAT, e-invoicing, and information reporting, rather than a US sales tax tool sitting alongside four other compliance products from four other vendors. Model 1 pays off from there if you qualify as a CSP-compensated seller across most of your member-state footprint, because that is the part the states fund. The assigned tax professional is the other half of the fit: a named preparer is worth most to a team that already knows what to ask one for.
Not a fit for
- You have to compare on price before you talk to anyone. Sovos publishes no figure, no tier, and no unit of measure, there’s no trial and no self-serve signup, and every route ends at a demo request. Getting a comparable number out of it means running a sales cycle first.
- You want to keep your own calculation engine. Sovos is explicit that under Model 1 “that seller must use Sovos for both calculation and reporting/remittance,” so a filing-only or a calculation-only arrangement isn’t on offer inside the program.
- You want one bundled number. Coverage outside the SST certified states, exemption certificate management through CertManager, and vendor invoice validation through Use Tax Manager are each a separate purchase, so your total gets assembled rather than quoted.
- You want to be filing next month without running a project. Onboarding goes through an implementation team and a product mapping exercise before anything is filed, which is the right order for a large catalog and slow going for a small one.
Sources, and when this profile was last checked
Profile last checked: August 19, 2026. Everything above comes from Sovos’s own public materials and the Governing Board listing, with no review aggregator and no data vendor used.
- Governing Board: the Sovos Certified Service Provider detail page, linked above, and the certified provider list.
- Sovos: the SST Model 1 page, linked above, the SST fact sheet last modified in August 2024, the integrations and API page, the filing managed services page, and the About page.
One observation about page content, recorded with its fetch date and not as an inference about intent, commitment, or service quality. As fetched on August 19, 2026, the words streamlined and SST appeared nowhere in the HTML of the Sovos homepage, the sales and use tax hub, or the sales and use tax products index, and the website address on the Governing Board listing resolved to a managed services page that mentions neither SST nor CSP status. The SST Model 1 page is where the provider’s published SST material sits.
