Simplify Sales Tax A guide to the Streamlined Sales Tax program

Providers

TaxCloud as an SST Certified Service Provider

TaxCloud is one of six providers certified by the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board, and one of five currently offering free CSP services to qualifying sellers. It’s a United States sales tax platform built for mid-market ecommerce and SaaS brands with multi-state footprints, and SST is included on every one of its plans. Pricing is published in full, in two parts: a subscription priced by order volume, and a separate filing plan priced by returns. You buy both.

What you’d be buying here is a single-market product, and that shapes most of what follows. TaxCloud sells United States sales and use tax compliance, plus Canada, with registration and threshold management coming soon. Certification is what makes the money work: it lets a member state pay TaxCloud directly for the certified work done for a seller who qualifies, so that bill never reaches you. The company positions itself for mid-market brands with nexus in five or more states, roughly the footprint where SST membership starts doing real work.

Is TaxCloud certified, and does it offer free CSP services?

Yes on both, and the Governing Board is where you check it rather than the vendor. Its list of Certified Service Providers (CSPs) names Avalara, TaxCloud, Sovos, AccurateTax, and Avior as currently offering free services, and lists Exactor as certified but not currently offering them under the program. The Board’s detail page for TaxCloud sets out the free scope in its own words: “returns preparation, filing, and remittance, as well as exemption certificate processing for invoices and sales tax registration for remote sellers.”

TaxCloud is approved by the Governing Board as a Certified Service Provider, and filing is free across the 24 member states. One thing to hold onto before you build on it: designation is a single contract with the Governing Board rather than a state-by-state approval, so nobody is certified in one member state and not the next. What decides whether the work is free for you is the CSP-compensated seller test, applied state by state.

What gates the free work for you is whether you qualify as a CSP-compensated seller. That’s tested state by state rather than granted at the company level, five criteria applied one state at a time, and your answer can differ in every state you file in. Work through the CSP-compensated seller test before you treat any state as free.

What does TaxCloud actually do?

Table: what TaxCloud does, by function. Checked August 19, 2026.

FunctionWhat it does
CalculationListed on the Premium tier only. Calculation is inside the certified CSP scope. On Shopify and Stripe, the platform’s own tax product calculates at checkout
RegistrationFree for remote sellers in SST states, on both TaxCloud’s own page and the Board’s detail page. Registration isn’t on the Governing Board’s certified free services list, so this is TaxCloud’s offer rather than a program baseline. Priced by quote outside the SST states
Filing and remittanceA separate filing plan, priced by number of returns, from $399 a year for 12 returns or from $39 a month billed monthly, outside SST scope. Colorado and Louisiana carry a surcharge and unused filings do not roll over
Notice managementListed in the pricing page FAQ as part of free SST services
Audit responseAn add-on from $99 per month
Exemption certificatesStores and applies certificate details. No automated verification or renewal tracking
NexusMonitoring across all 50 states, listed on both tiers

One row is worth a question when you get on a call. Calculation sits on the Premium tier and also inside the certified scope the states fund, so if you expect to qualify as a CSP-compensated seller, ask which tier carries calculation for you.

What does TaxCloud integrate with?

Your platform decides more here than the feature list does. The published integrations directory lists BigCommerce, Shopify, Stripe, Odoo, QuickBooks, WooCommerce, Magento Open Source, Adobe Commerce, Miva, Ability Commerce, Chargebee, AcctVantage ERP, a custom API, and CSV upload, with Xero, Zoho Books, and NetSuite marked coming soon. SAP and Microsoft Dynamics don’t appear at all. The API is REST and JSON with an OpenAPI 3.0 specification, and it sits on the Premium tier.

Two structural points matter more than the length of that list. The company is direct about the first one: on Shopify, “while Shopify Tax handles your calculations, TaxCloud handles the rest,” and on Stripe it says the same thing the other way round, that Stripe Tax handles the real-time calculation at checkout. So on the two largest platforms TaxCloud supports, you’re buying the compliance layer that runs after the sale, not the engine that prices the cart.

The second is marketplace volume. TaxCloud doesn’t file marketplace facilitator orders, because the originating marketplace already remits that tax to the state itself. Those orders still count toward your nexus, even though they never land on a return TaxCloud files for you.

What does TaxCloud cost?

Published in full, and the number to watch is not the headline one. Pricing comes in two plans and every customer buys both. The subscription is priced by your annual order volume, starting at $199 a year on Starter at 1,200 orders and $799 a year on Premium at 2,400 orders, and it climbs a published ladder from there. Filing is a separate plan priced by how many returns you file, from $399 a year for 12, or from $39 a month if you bill monthly. Neither includes the other.

So the floor is the two added together, which is $598 a year on Starter rather than the $199 the tier card shows, before any registrations at $249 each or audit support at $99 a month. Annual billing saves up to 16% against monthly, Colorado and Louisiana filings carry a surcharge, and unused filings don’t roll over. SST is included on every plan with no tier condition, so the tier decision is about calculation and API access rather than about program access.

Two of the six now publish complete tier pricing. Sovos, AccurateTax, and Avior publish no figures at all. Avalara publishes a named SST tier, priced per state per month, which is a different unit again and stops at $50M in revenue. For the six-way picture, see what each certified provider charges.

Two conditions attached to the money are worth reading closely. Orders from member states don’t count toward your plan allotment where you’re enrolled in SST for those states and have no physical nexus in them, so that relief turns on your footprint as much as your plan. And whether the states fund your filing is set by the program, not by the plan you buy: you qualify state by state, through the CSP-compensated seller test, or not at all.

Audit support is the one line to settle before you sign, because the pricing page lists it in two places with two different answers. Ask which applies in the states you’re registered in, and get it in writing, the same as you’d ask of any provider on this list.

How does TaxCloud handle support?

You get US-based phone and email on both tiers. A dedicated success manager and custom onboarding are additional Premium services. Onboarding time is described in general terms rather than committed to, so you can’t set a go-live date from it.

The part a support relationship actually turns on is the part you can’t check in advance. There’s no published response-time target, no service level agreement, and no implementation timeline you could hold anyone to. If any of those would decide it for your approvers, get them written into the contract, because nothing published commits to them.

Best fit for a mid-market brand in five or more states

TaxCloud publishes for a mid-market ecommerce or SaaS brand selling in the US, with nexus in five or more states and a meaningful share of those in SST full member states.

Five or more states is the company’s own stated floor for fit, and it’s roughly where SST membership starts paying for itself: one registration instead of many, one return format across the full member states, and the states covering the filing work wherever you qualify as a CSP-compensated seller. Below that floor the arithmetic thins out for the program and for this provider at the same time.

The platform fit points the same way. If your orders run through Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, or Stripe, and you’re content to let Shopify Tax or Stripe Tax do the checkout math while somebody else takes registration, filing, and notices off your desk, that’s the shape the published integration list is built around.

Not a fit for

  • A footprint under five states. Five or more states of nexus is the company’s own floor for fit, and below it neither the program nor this provider earns its keep yet.
  • One calculation engine behind every checkout. On the two largest platforms it supports, TaxCloud isn’t the engine: its own integration pages hand your checkout math to Shopify Tax and to Stripe Tax.
  • An SAP or Microsoft Dynamics estate. Neither appears in the published integrations directory, and NetSuite is coming soon rather than available.
  • Marketplace-heavy or certificate-heavy operations. TaxCloud doesn’t file marketplace facilitator orders, and on exemption certificates it stores and applies the details without automated verification or renewal tracking, and without keeping the document itself.
  • A team that needs calculation or API access on the entry tier. Both sit on Premium, so the tier you buy decides whether you get them, even though SST itself is on every plan.
  • Anything outside North America. Coverage is the United States and Canada, and Canadian registration and threshold management are still coming.
  • Reading the subscription price as your bill. The filing plan is a separate purchase and you need both, so the tier card understates what you’ll pay by the cost of the filing plan.

Frequently asked questions about TaxCloud

Does a TaxCloud subscription include filing?

No. The subscription and the filing plan are separate purchases and every customer buys both, which is why the tier price on its own understates the bill. The subscription is priced by your annual order volume, from $199 a year on Starter and $799 a year on Premium. The filing plan is priced by how many returns you file, from $399 a year for 12. Add them and the floor is $598 a year on Starter and $1,198 a year on Premium, before any add-on. For how far a six-way cost comparison goes on the published record, see what each certified provider charges.

What does SST inclusion on every TaxCloud plan get you, and what does it not?

It gets you access to the program from whichever tier you buy, with no tier condition attached, so the tier decision is about calculation and API access rather than about program access. What it doesn’t get you is the free work itself. Whether the states fund your certified services runs on the CSP-compensated seller test, applied state by state, and no plan you buy moves that answer. A higher tier buys real-time calculation and the API, not a different position in the program.

If you sell on Shopify or Stripe, who calculates the tax at checkout?

The platform does. TaxCloud’s own integration pages put checkout calculation with Shopify Tax on Shopify and with Stripe Tax on Stripe, and put TaxCloud after the sale: nexus tracking, registration, filing, remittance, and notices. Real-time calculation sits on the Premium tier, so on those two platforms it’s a Premium feature your checkout is already covering somewhere else.

What sits outside the two plans?

Add-ons, plus two conditions on the filing plan itself. Registrations run $249 each, and audit support runs $99 a month or $1,188 a year. Colorado and Louisiana filings carry a surcharge, and unused filings don’t roll over. Annual billing saves up to 16% against monthly, so your billing term moves the total too.
